A cavity — or dental caries — is a permanently damaged area in the hard surface of your tooth that develops into tiny holes. Left untreated, cavities grow deeper, reach the nerve, and eventually require root canal therapy or extraction. Catching decay early and filling it promptly is one of the most straightforward and cost-effective treatments in dentistry.

At Dentist, we use only tooth-colored composite resin — never mercury amalgam. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth structure, which means less healthy enamel is removed during preparation. The result is a restoration that looks natural, feels comfortable, and strengthens the tooth.

The Filling Procedure

After numbing the area with local anesthesia, we remove all decayed tissue using a precise dental drill or air abrasion. The cavity is cleaned, conditioned, and layered with composite resin, which is cured with a blue light between layers. Once the filling is shaped and polished, your bite is checked for accuracy. Most single-tooth fillings are completed in under one hour.

Replacing Old Metal Fillings

Many patients choose to replace silver amalgam fillings with composite for both aesthetic and health reasons. We remove the old filling, clean the preparation, and place a seamless tooth-colored restoration. Most insurance plans cover the cost of replacement when the original filling is failing.

Aftercare

Sensitivity for the first 24–48 hours after a filling is normal. Avoid very hot or cold foods immediately after the appointment. Composite fillings can last 7–10 years with good oral hygiene and regular cleanings every six months.
